best Collins poem

"This much I remember" I really like the way he expresses the color orange. It takes a lot of talent to see something so ordinary and make it come alive. It takes a stroke of genius then teetering to get something right. I try the write what you know approach i must be doing something wrong. I really do want to grow as a poet im going to try being more bold.

  1. I love this poem. I love Billy Collins expression of a orange and how he interprets it's beauty. My favorite phrase in this poem, is stroke of genius. The only thing I would suggest is that I feel it needs something more at the end or maybe it's just me.

  2. I agree that Collins does a good job making ordinary things seem extaordinary with the language he uses to describe them. That poem wasn't one of my personal favorites but I can see why you connected with it. I think the 'write what you know' approach to poetry is probably one of the best methods. It's just important to figure out exactly what it is that you do know :)

  3. I've never fully believed in the "write what you know" philosophy, but it's growing on me. I do think that a writer should be able to connect to things that they haven't experienced and still be able to do a fantastic job portraying it, because that's our job--to get in to people's heads. However, lately, I've come to realize that there are some things that are just more accessible after having experienced them.
